The job market for programmers is always a hot topic, and this year is no exception. In early November 2024, I conducted an analysis of the most popular programming languages based on job listings on Dice, Indeed, and LinkedIn. Here’s what I found.
To determine popularity, I searched each site using the language name alone. However, some popular languages have generic names, making it difficult to find relevant listings. To address this issue, I added keywords like “developer” or “programmer” to my search terms.
The results showed that LinkedIn had the most job listings, followed by Indeed and Dice. The top six languages for job success are Python, SQL, HTML, Java, C++, and JavaScript. These languages fall within the “opportunity zone,” meaning they have high demand and can help you land a job.
If you’re starting out or looking to upskill, focusing on these languages will increase your chances of finding employment. For those with moderate demand skills in Swift, C#, PHP, TypeScript, and Go, there are still jobs available.
In contrast, “declining demand” languages like shell scripting tools, Ruby, Kotlin, C, R, Rust, Lua, or Dart should be included on your resume but not prioritized for learning unless required by the job.
The data suggests that knowing these top six languages will give you a competitive edge in the job market. Stay tuned for more updates and insights into programming language popularity and job trends.
