Top CBS News “60 Minutes” Producer to Leave Amid Trump Lawsuit

A top producer at CBS News’ flagship program “60 Minutes” has announced his departure from the show, citing a lack of independence due to the network’s high-profile battle with President Donald Trump. Bill Owens, the executive producer, said in a memo that he would not be allowed to make independent decisions on what was right for the show or its audience.

Owens’ departure comes as CBS is embroiled in a lawsuit with Trump over a 2022 interview with then-Vice President Kamala Harris. The network aired one part of Harris’ response, while showing another part in a preview. Trump claims the editing made her seem more competent.

The dispute has led to increased scrutiny from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), which is considering CBS’s bid to sell to Skydance, a move backed by CEO Shari Redstone. The FCC has also investigated other media outlets, including NPR and PBS.

Owens had previously stated he would not apologize for any editing decisions made during his tenure on “60 Minutes.” His departure marks another twist in the ongoing saga between Trump and CBS News.
