Tennessee remained unbeaten and improved to 10-0 on the season after defeating Illinois 66-64 in a thrilling matchup at State Farm Center on Saturday. Senior guard Jordan Gainey led the charge, scoring 18 points in the second half as the sixth man of the game.
Gainey’s right-handed layup from the left side with just over five seconds to play proved to be the difference-maker, securing the win for Tennessee. The transfer player finished the game with a team-high 23 points, including six makes from 10 attempts and two assists. His performance in the second half was particularly impressive, going 6-for-10 from the floor.
The win extends Tennessee’s winning streak to its longest start since the 1999-2000 season. The Vols will look to continue their momentum as they host Western Carolina on Tuesday at home, followed by matchups against Middle Tennessee State and Norfolk State in the coming weeks.
