Tornado Forces IndyCar Practice Cancellation at Iowa Speedway

Severe thunderstorms and a tornado touched down near Iowa Speedway, forcing the cancellation of IndyCar practice sessions Friday. The National Weather Service issued a tornado warning as lightning strikes were spotted within eight miles of the track. A wall cloud and cloud rotation could be seen just north of the track, with another touch-down reported 1.5 miles away.

Indy NXT’s lone practice was halted when rain began to fall at 2:01 p.m., resulting in only about 30 minutes of running before storms arrived. The junior series ultimately had to postpone its qualifying session until Saturday.

The revised Saturday schedule for Iowa Speedway features a high-line running session from 10-10:30 a.m., followed by an all-cars practice from 10:45-11:30 a.m. Indy NXT’s race will start at noon, and IndyCar’s qualifying session will run from 1:30-2:30 p.m.
