A US tourist was fatally shot early Sunday at a nightspot in La Perla, a small town on the outskirts of Old San Juan, Puerto Rico. Kevin Mares, 25, from New York, died after being shot in the abdomen while visiting the area for a Bad Bunny concert.
The shooting occurred in the “Shelter for Mistreated Men” bar when several people began arguing, leading to one person pulling out a gun and firing at least three others, including Mares. Authorities say he was an innocent bystander.
Two other men on the scene are still hospitalized with injuries, while the shooter remains unidentified. Police have limited information about the incident, citing ongoing investigations.
La Perla has struggled with violence for years, earning a reputation as one of Puerto Rico’s most dangerous neighborhoods. In 2011, federal agents raided the area and arrested several individuals, including a community leader who was later convicted. However, isolated incidents continue to occur.
The island has reported 277 killings so far this year, highlighting ongoing public safety concerns in La Perla and other areas. The incident marks the second fatal shooting in the town this year, following the April killing of a 24-year-old tourist whose body was set on fire after being attacked.
