Toyota Lexus to Overhaul Future Products with EV-Ready Platforms

Toyota-Lexus is planning a major overhaul of its future products and platforms, according to a report by Autoblog. The company aims to introduce a new naming convention for electric vehicles (EVs), hybrid-electric vehicles (HEVs), plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), and internal combustion engine vehicles (ICEs) into the same name.

This change is expected to simplify model naming, reducing confusion among customers. Additionally, Toyota-Lexus plans to adopt modular vehicle production platforms that can accommodate both combustion engines and dedicated electric powerplants. For example, the Lexus ES will share the same GA-K monocoque and exterior design with its electric and HEV variants.

Some models, including the LandCruiser and GRsports, are expected to remain unchanged, as they are considered “protected species.” The company is also working on a new BYD ute model that will differ from export versions in terms of styling and features.

Meanwhile, BMW Australia has announced its best-selling X1 small SUV will be added to the Sport Collection, bringing extra features and an increased price tag. The revised X1 sDrive18i now starts at $72,900, with added features like Adaptive M suspension and new alloy wheels.

Lastly, Volkswagen Australia has introduced a new performance upgrade for its Golf R, called the ‘Warmenau package’, which adds Akrapovič exhausts, carbon-trim interior, and bespoke 19-inch alloy wheels. This optional upgrade is available for $6,500.
