Toyota Unit Hino Pays $1.6bn to Settle Emissions Scandal

A Toyota subsidiary, Hino Motors, has agreed to pay $1.6 billion to settle a US emissions scandal involving the sale of diesel engines that produced higher emissions than reported. The company pleaded guilty to deceiving US regulators and will be banned from exporting its diesel engines for five years.

Hino submitted “false and fraudulent” emission testing data, allowing it to sell 105,000 illegal engines in the US between 2010 and 2022. The US Justice Department accused Hino of a “years-long scheme” to boost profits by misrepresenting emissions data.

As part of the settlement, Hino will also implement a compliance and ethics plan during the five-year ban period. The company plans to recall infringing heavy-duty trucks and replace marine and locomotive engines with cleaner alternatives.

This deal comes as several car makers have admitted to lying about diesel engine emissions over the past decade, including Volkswagen, which has spent billions paying fines and compensating customers in a scandal known as “Dieselgate.”
