A Virginia high school track meet took a shocking turn when an opposing athlete’s baton struck Kaelen Tucker, sending her to the hospital with serious injuries. The incident occurred during the Class 3 State Finals at Brookville High School.
Tucker, who was racing in the 4X200 event, claimed that she was jostled by the opposing athlete and then hit with the baton as she attempted to regain her position on the track. Her mother quickly rushed onto the scene, and trainers assisted Tucker off the field.
While no formal diagnosis has been made, Tucker’s doctor confirmed a concussion and possible fractured skull. The Tucker family is seeking an apology from the opposing team, citing that they should have checked on their daughter after the incident.
The Virginia High School League (VHSL) is investigating the matter, which has been deemed a serious safety issue. However, VHSL officials refused to comment on individual disciplinary actions or athletes involved.
Tucker’s parents expressed frustration that no one apologized to them during the meet, despite being present and witnessing the incident. They have reached out to the athletic director of I.C. Norcom High School and the father of the opposing athlete, but only received an apology from those individuals. The VHSL stated that the actions taken by the meet director were appropriate and in line with league rules.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing, and 10 News will continue to follow this developing story.
