Geomagnetic superstorms, caused by solar flares and coronal mass ejections, are wreaking havoc on modern tractors in the US. These storms, which painted vibrant auroras across North America, have also made high-tech farming equipment malfunction.
Millions of people witnessed widespread auroras dancing overhead as a result of the powerful geomagnetic disturbances. However, farmers experienced something unusual – their tractors started swaying from side to side as if possessed by a demon.
Experts say solar particles are interfering with the machines’ GPS systems, causing the problem. The US is experiencing high levels of solar activity due to solar maximum, the peak of the sun’s 11-year cycle. This has led to frequent solar flares and coronal mass ejections, which can trigger geomagnetic storms.
Between May 10 and May 12, five consecutive CMEs hit Earth, triggering a powerful G5 storm that was felt worldwide. Farmers in northern states reported unusual activity with their tractors during this time, including “dancing” from side to side while working the land.
GPS technology relies on constant contact with satellites in low Earth orbit (LEO). However, geomagnetic storms can interfere with GPS signals, causing issues with modern tractors like those built by John Deere. At least 50% of US farmers rely heavily on GPS for their machines, and many have reported similar problems during the May and October storms.
As solar maximum persists, scientists warn that solar activity will remain high or potentially increase during a new phase known as the “battle zone.” This could lead to more GPS-related space weather effects in the near future.
