Transgender Rights Case Headed to US Supreme Court

A recent oral argument in the U.S. v. Skrmetti case has significant implications for transgender rights in America. The case centers on Tennessee’s “SB 1” law, which restricts medical treatment for transgender minors.

Chase Strangio, a trans man and lawyer, argued the state’s stance against treating minors with transition-related care. He is the first openly trans attorney to appear before the US Supreme Court. Strangio has previously worked on landmark LGBTQ cases, including Obergefell v. Hodges and Bostock v. Clayton County.

The opposing side was represented by J. Matthew Rice, a former Justice Thomas clerk who became Tennessee’s solicitor general in March. Rice argued that SB 1 is constitutional.

During an online news conference, medical professional Susan Lacy estimated she has treated over 800 transgender patients, including minors. She emphasized the need for parental consent for treatment of minors. Two fathers of trans youth also shared their personal stories, highlighting the importance of access to care and support.

The case will now head to the US Supreme Court for a decision on SB 1’s constitutionality.
