TreesCharlotte, a nonprofit organization, is hosting an “TreeAdoption” event on Saturday, Dec. 14, to distribute 600 free trees to residents of east Charlotte. The event aims to promote the benefits of a healthy tree canopy, including cleaner air, fresher water, and natural beauty.
Residents in specific zip codes (28205, 28206, 28212, 28213, 28215, and 28227) are invited to register for two free trees and mulch, as well as instructions on proper planting and caring for the trees. Registration opens at 10 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 6, and ends at 12:01 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 12.
The organization cites several positive impacts associated with a healthy tree canopy, including improved social inequities, cooler urban areas, safer streets, good vibes, and healthier bodies. These benefits include:
– Improved social equity by creating fresher air, cleaner drinking water, and cooler neighborhoods
– Cooling effects that can lower energy bills and reduce heat-related illnesses
– Safer roads with fewer incidents of speeding and accidents
– Reduced symptoms of depression and improved focus in children who live near trees
– Improved lung and heart health due to the cooling and cleaning effects of trees
