Rome’s iconic Trevi Fountain has reopened its doors after a three-month renovation period, just in time for the start of the 2025 Jubilee Holy Year. The $341,000 restoration project aimed to preserve this 18th-century landmark, one of Italy’s main tourist attractions.
To manage the crowds expected during the jubilee celebrations, Rome City officials have implemented new measures. Visitors will be required to book online and pay a €2 ($2.20) entrance fee, with only 400 people allowed inside at any given time. This limit aims to provide ample space for visitors to observe the fountain’s beauty.
The renovation work was led by Claudio Parisi Presicce, Rome’s superintendent for cultural heritage, who stated that the new measures will enable visitors to appreciate the values and history of the Trevi Fountain more effectively. The area around the fountain may also be partially blocked off during the jubilee celebrations.
A unique tradition surrounding the fountain involves making a coin toss into its makeshift pool, with legend having it that this action guarantees a return trip to Rome. This custom has generated an estimated €1.5 million ($1.6 million) annually for 15 years, with donations going to the Catholic charity Caritas.
