Tropical Cyclone Zelia Brings Destruction to Western Australia Coast

Tropical cyclone Zelia has strengthened into a powerful Category 5 storm, with residents in western Australia bracing for impact. The storm is expected to make landfall on the Pilbara coast, where major mining and resource hub Port Hedland is directly in its path.

According to the Australian Bureau of Meteorology, Zelia’s development was rapid, with the storm intensifying from a Category 3 to a Category 5 cyclone within 24 hours. Sustained winds of up to 127 mph (205 kph) and gusts of up to 177 mph (285 kph) are expected.

The region is also at risk of severe flooding due to the tropical moisture that will persist for days after Zelia passes. The jet stream’s position has helped ventilate the cyclone, making it more destructive before arrival.

Port Hedland residents have prepared for the worst, with flight disruptions and school closures underway. The city is still recovering from Tropical Cyclone Ilsa, which hit western areas in 2023.

Australia’s cyclone season runs from November to April, with around a dozen cyclones tracked annually. Cyclone activity tends to spike during La NiƱa climate events.
