Tropical Storm Debby Strengthens into Hurricane Heading for Florida

Tropical Storm Debby strengthens into a Category 1 hurricane as it heads toward Florida

Tropical Storm Debby has strengthened into a Category 1 hurricane and is expected to make landfall in the Big Bend area of Florida on Monday, according to the national weather service. Heavy rainfall from the storm could cause catastrophic flooding in Florida, South Carolina, and Georgia.

The storm’s outer bands have already caused flooding and power outages along the west coast of Florida, with some areas experiencing up to 6 inches (15 centimeters) of rain. The storm is expected to stall over northern Florida and then move into coastal regions of Georgia and South Carolina, bringing potential record-breaking rainfall totals of up to 30 inches (76 centimeters).

Residents in low-lying areas near the coast are at risk for flooding, including Savannah, Georgia; Hilton Head, South Carolina; and Charleston, South Carolina. The storm could also bring life-threatening storm surge along Florida’s Gulf Coast.

The hurricane center is warning of significant flooding impacts that could last through Friday, with some areas potentially seeing a month’s worth of rain in just four days. Officials are urging people to take precautions and follow evacuation orders if necessary.

The storm has prompted governors to declare emergencies in affected states, with Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis activating the National Guard and utility crews preparing to restore power after the storm.
