Donald Trump is already taking steps that resemble those of a president-elect, despite not being officially in office for 45 days. Foreign leaders are speaking with him, and he’s making aggressive statements, such as threatening tariffs on Canada and Mexico.
In contrast, Joe Biden is stepping back from the public eye as his term comes to an end. The sitting president has been largely absent from public view, answering only two questions from reporters during a recent foreign trip.
Trump’s behavior is seen as a way to assert his influence before the official transfer of power. A former senior White House official described Trump’s approach as “not following rules that he thinks are stupid rules” and stated that he believes in taking action to benefit people’s lives, even if it means bypassing protocol.
This weekend, Trump will meet with French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris for the reopening of Notre Dame Cathedral. The event overshadows Biden’s trip to sub-Saharan Africa, which was marred by controversy over his son Hunter’s pardon.
In contrast, Kamala Harris’ campaign spent significantly more on advertising and outreach efforts than Trump’s, despite losing the election. The new campaign finance reports show that Harris raised $160 million but spent $277 million in the final weeks, while Trump raised $87 million but spent $113 million.
