Trump Admin Cuts $1.1 Billion in Washington State Energy Grants

The US Department of Energy is canceling over $1 billion in grants for energy projects in Washington state, according to Governor Bob Ferguson’s office. This move is part of a larger rollback of $7.6 billion in funding for 223 projects nationwide, which is largely affecting Democratic-leaning states.

Critics say the decision is “outrageous” and “transparently political,” as it targets blue states like Washington during a Republican-led government shutdown. Governor Ferguson has vowed to fight the move with the Attorney General’s Office.

The Department of Energy claims that the projects did not meet certain criteria, including advancing national energy needs and providing a positive return on investment for taxpayers. However, some recipients have already begun appealing the decision, which they will have 30 days to do so.
