Trump Administration Allies with Tesla Against Car Crash Reporting Regulation

Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s company is opposing a federal regulation requiring car crash data reporting, joined by the Trump transition team. The regulation was recommended by the transition team as “excessive” data collection, according to a document seen by Reuters.

Musk previously worked on government efficiency under the Trump administration and pledged to cut federal staff, budgets, and regulations. Tesla vehicles were involved in 40 out of 45 fatal crashes reported to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) through October 15. The company has drawn lawsuits over its autopilot and “full self-driving” systems.

Tesla executives believe they would benefit from a presidential administration that agrees with their stance on crash reporting. Musk spent $250 million supporting Trump’s election campaign. The Alliance for Automotive Innovation, a trade group for rival car manufacturers, also opposes the regulation.
