Tom Homan, the former border czar under Donald Trump, is at the center of a closed investigation by the Justice Department into bribery claims. In September 2022, Homan was recorded taking $50,000 in cash from undercover F.B.I. agents posing as businessmen seeking government contracts related to border security.
Homan’s encounter with the undercover agents sparked an investigation, but it was later shut down due to doubts about whether prosecutors could prove that Homan had agreed to specific acts in exchange for the money. The investigation was also closed because Homan did not hold an official government position at the time of the meeting.
The decision to close the case came amid controversy over Trump’s control over the Justice Department and its handling of investigations into his allies. The Biden administration described the investigation as a “blatantly political investigation,” while the Justice Department argued that it was focused on real threats to national security.
