The US federal government has cancelled a contract to develop a vaccine against bird flu viruses, including H5N1, that could cause pandemics. The decision was made due to concerns over the safety of mRNA technology being used in the vaccine.
A $766 million contract with Moderna was terminated by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) after a review concluded that continued investment was not scientifically or ethically justifiable.
“This is not simply about efficacy – it’s about safety, integrity, and trust,” said HHS Communications Director Andrew Nixon. “We are shifting federal vaccine funding priorities towards platforms with better-established safety profiles and transparent data practices.”
However, experts are critical of the decision, citing the risks associated with the H5N1 virus. “The program to develop the next generation of vaccines was essential to protecting Americans,” said Dr. Ashish Jha, dean of the Brown School of Public Health.
The cancellation comes despite Moderna’s interim analysis showing a positive immune response and safety profile in a study involving 300 healthy adults. The company will explore alternative paths forward for the program.
Critics argue that the move puts the lives and health of Americans at risk, particularly if the virus develops the ability to spread from person to person.
