Trump Administration Forces Millions to Travel to Overburdened Social Security Offices

The Social Security Administration (SSA) is set to implement a new policy that will force millions more seniors and people with disabilities to travel to its already overwhelmed field offices. The move, which takes effect in August, requires beneficiaries to complete routine tasks like address changes and claim status inquiries through an online verification process, generating a one-time PIN code.

This change will add 3.4 million more annual trips to SSA offices, putting a significant burden on rural areas and those with transportation or mobility difficulties. The Trump Administration’s decision comes despite no public notice or feedback from stakeholders, and the agency has provided limited justification for the change, citing “fraud risk” as its sole reason.

The new policy compounds existing restrictions on phone service, which were already forcing 1.9 million additional trips per year. This increase in in-person visits will result in longer waits and slower processing times, exacerbating an already strained system. The SSA has reduced staff to answer customer calls and service queries, further increasing the risk of negative consequences for beneficiaries.

The move contradicts the agency’s promise to provide “outstanding service that works for everyone we serve.” Experts warn that this policy will worsen the experience for those seeking appointments and relying on field staff services. The SSA must reconsider its decision to prevent adding more stress to the system for millions of beneficiaries.
