The US government has reportedly halted work on a vital global climate report, according to a scientist involved in the project. The move comes as part of the Trump administration’s ongoing efforts to withdraw from global climate action and research.
In 2019, President Donald Trump pulled the US out of the Paris Agreement, a landmark international treaty aiming to limit global warming. This latest development suggests the administration is taking steps to limit US involvement in key scientific initiatives.
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is the world’s leading authority on climate change, and its reports inform policymakers globally about the risks posed by global warming. The IPCC’s first report was published in 1990 and has since become a cornerstone of global climate science.
A planned international meeting of IPCC authors in China next week is now uncertain due to the halt in work. NASA scientist Kate Calvin, who was set to co-chair the discussion, will not be attending the meeting.
Climate advocates are expressing concerns about the implications of this move on global climate research and action. Harjeet Singh, a climate advocate, stated that excluding US scientists from IPCC reports “undermines this collaborative effort” at a critical time when robust climate action is needed worldwide.
