Trump Administration Halt Lays Off CFPB Staff

The US Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) will remain open for at least 17 days under an agreement reached with a federal judge and the National Treasury Employees Union. The deal prevents the administration from issuing layoffs or “reduction in force” notices to employees, as well as shuttering the agency.

A federal judge signed off on the agreement, which marks the second time this month a court has blocked the Trump administration’s efforts to close an agency. The order maintains the status quo at CFPB until March 3, when another hearing will take place to determine whether the preliminary injunction should be extended.

The agreement also prohibits the transfer of funds from the CFPB and prevents any data or records from being deleted, destroyed, or impaired. This move comes as the agency has already fired its probationary period employees and is reportedly planning to terminate 95% of staff in a short order.

This development follows similar actions taken by another federal judge, who restrained the administration’s efforts at the US Agency for International Development until February 21.
