The US government is seeking to expand natural gas supply flow to the Northeast region through interstate pipelines. This goal has been hindered by local opposition and Democratic state governments in the past. However, with the support of Governor Kathy Hochul, an Oklahoma-based energy company, Williams, has announced plans to revive two pipeline projects.
Williams aims to build a pipeline spanning hundreds of miles across New York State, running beneath New York Harbor to New Jersey. The project is expected to deliver reliable energy to the Northeast region. However, environmental advocates have expressed concerns that Governor Hochul should reject the new requests, citing past opposition from her predecessor, Andrew Cuomo.
In contrast, Hochul has signaled openness to considering the benefits of the pipeline projects, stating that she will make sure any applicant follows state and federal laws. She also acknowledged the need for a balanced approach, highlighting the potential creation of union jobs in construction. The projects are expected to face regulatory hurdles, with National Grid needing to adjust its long-term energy plan if approved.
The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission has received Williams’ petition to revive the Northeast Supply Enhancement Project, which was previously rejected due to environmental concerns. If granted federal approval, the pipeline projects could alleviate energy supply constraints in the Northeast and reduce reliance on higher-emission fuels. However, critics argue that the projects pose a threat to water quality and should be denied.
