The Trump administration has threatened to withhold $73 million in highway funds from New York unless the state revokes commercial driver’s licenses issued to non-citizens. The move is part of a nationwide effort to prevent undocumented immigrant drivers from operating large vehicles. Secretary Sean Duffy called New York “the worst offender” for issuing licenses without sufficient proof of work authorization, citing a federal audit that found more than half of 200 non-domiciled commercial license holders no longer had proper authorization. However, the state’s Department of Motor Vehicles says it complies with federal regulations and will not be intimidated by the threat.
