US President Donald Trump has intensified his campaign against wind and solar projects in America, pushing them through a series of onerous regulations that threaten to slow down renewable energy production. The new measures, part of the “Big Beautiful Bill” signed into law in July, include increased federal review requirements for wind and solar projects, restrictions on tax credits, and foreign-sourcing rules that penalize projects using Chinese parts.
The Trump administration has taken a hardline stance against wind power, despite evidence showing its benefits for the environment. Trump himself has long been opposed to wind turbines, calling them “green energy scams” and falsely claiming they cause cancer. However, experts argue that air pollution from fossil fuels is a greater threat to public health.
Under the new regulations, developers must now demonstrate significant physical work on their projects before they can qualify for tax credits. The administration has also revised rules governing transmission projects, making it harder for wind and solar farms to get built.
Industry leaders say Trump’s actions are part of an “America Last” energy policy that prioritizes fossil fuels over renewable energy. CEO Jason Grumet of the American Clean Power Association warns that this approach will hinder America’s transition to a more efficient, lower-carbon energy system.
Despite Trump’s efforts, renewables such as solar power are still expected to fill most of the short-term gap in power generation. The US is rapidly expanding its use of renewable energy sources, driven by factors such as AI data centers and rising electricity bill costs.
