Trump Administration to Shut Down Federal EV Chargers

The Trump administration plans to shut down electric vehicle (EV) chargers at all federal government buildings and sell off the General Services Administration’s newly purchased EVs. The GSA, which manages federal government-owned buildings, operates 8,000 charging ports across the country.

According to an email sent to regional offices, the GSA has received direction that all its charging stations are not mission-critical. Once current network contracts are canceled, the chargers will be turned off and taken out of service.

The decision is expected to significantly impact federal employees who own personal EVs and rely on these charging stations for recharging. Colorado Public Radio reported on the email sent to the Denver Federal Center, which has 22 EV charging stations at 11 locations.

This move comes as the Trump administration takes steps to align with its current direction, including removing information about fleet electrification from the GSA’s website. The fate of the newly purchased EVs is also unclear, with speculation that they will be sold or stored.

This decision has sparked criticism, with many questioning the logic behind shutting down revenue-generating chargers to improve government finances. As the country grapples with climate change and energy efficiency, the move is seen as a step backward for sustainable transportation options.
