However, Russia has not confirmed Putin’s agreement to meet with Zelenskyy. Kremlin officials say they prefer to arrange the talks “step by step” rather than immediately. The US government says it is working to make the bilateral meeting happen.
The main point of contention between Trump and European leaders is their view of Putin. While Trump sees him as a potential partner, many others view him as an aggressor. French President Emmanuel Macron recently said Trump’s assessment of Putin was “crazy,” while Finnish President Alexander Stubb stated that Putin’s goals remain unchanged: to see Russia as a superpower, split the West, and deny Ukraine’s sovereignty.
The latest development comes after Russia’s strikes in Ukraine, which have raised concerns among European leaders about their ability to protect their ally. The talks are seen as an effort by Trump to find a peaceful resolution to the conflict without involving US troops.
