US President Donald Trump held a lengthy phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Saturday, discussing the escalating situation in the Middle East and Russia’s war in Ukraine. The conversation focused on Israel’s attacks on Iran’s nuclear program and retaliatory strikes. Trump urged Putin to end the war in Ukraine, while also pressing for a resolution to the Israeli-Iran conflict.
Putin briefed Trump on his recent talks with Iranian leaders, emphasizing Russia’s proposal to find mutually acceptable solutions to the issue. He warned of potential consequences if the conflict escalates. Trump described the situation as “very alarming,” but acknowledged Israel’s effectiveness in targeting Iranian targets.
The two leaders also discussed a possible return to negotiations on the Iranian nuclear program and the exchange of war prisoners between Russia and Ukraine. Despite this, US intelligence suggests that the Russia-Iran relationship has deepened since Putin launched his war on Ukraine in 2022.
