Trump and TSMC Announce $165B Manufacturing Expansion in Arizona

US President Donald Trump, along with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) CEO C.C. Wei, has announced a massive expansion of TSMC’s manufacturing facility in north Phoenix, Arizona, worth $165 billion. The investment aims to avoid tariffs and bring production closer to key customers like Apple, Nvidia, Broadcom, and AMD.

The new expansion includes plans for three new fabrication plants, two advanced packaging facilities, and a major research and development center. This is part of TSMC’s larger plan to establish itself as the largest single foreign direct investment in US history.

TSMC already employs 3,000 permanent workers at the facility and expects the expansion to support 40,000 construction jobs over the next four years. The company has projected 6,000 employees at the complex so far.

The move is seen as a significant win for Arizona, with Senator Mark Kelly calling it “huge news” that will put tens of thousands of Arizonans to work in good-paying jobs without requiring a four-year degree. Governor Katie Hobbs added that the expansion cements Arizona’s position as the epicenter of advanced chip manufacturing and innovation.

TSMC is producing semiconductors for products ranging from artificial intelligence to smartphones, with Apple being its largest customer. The company had previously invested $12 billion in the facility five years ago but has since increased its investment to $40 billion and then $65 billion before announcing the new expansion.
