Trump touted Washington as a global stage for soccer’s premier moment, while FIFA President Gianni Infantino brought gifts including the gold World Cup trophy and personalized tickets. This marks Trump’s fifth Oval Office meeting with Infantino, demonstrating his personal interest in the sport.
The announcement also provides an opportunity for Trump to be at the center of a major global event, as it coincides with his efforts to “beautify” and secure Washington D.C. The 2026 tournament will also take place at MetLife Stadium next year.
