Trump-backed Judges Nominated to Wait as Lumbee Tribe Seeks Federal Recognition

President Donald Trump nominated two Mississippi men to serve as federal judges and prosecutors but their nominations have been stalled due to a Senate delay. Meanwhile, the Lumbee tribe in North Carolina has waited for 137 years for federal recognition, seeking the same benefits and rights as other recognized tribes. Republican Senator Thom Tillis is using his leverage as a committee member to push for Wicker’s help to pass a bill recognizing the tribe through legislation. The Lumbee Tribe has more than 55,000 members and claims to be an amalgamation of various Siouan, Algonquian, and Iroquoian-speaking tribes.
