US President Donald Trump has accused China of violating a preliminary trade agreement with the US. In a social media post, Trump said China had reneged on a deal that paused retaliatory tariffs between the two countries.
The move led to a decline in stock futures, and US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer echoed Trump’s allegation, saying “we’re very concerned” about China’s non-compliance with the temporary trade deal. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent also stated that trade talks with China are “a bit stalled”.
The US and China agreed on a 90-day suspension of most tariffs imposed on each other’s imports in May. Trump had previously slapped high tariffs on Chinese imports, leading to retaliatory measures from China.
Trump claims the agreement helped stabilize China’s economy, but he says it has now been violated. The President’s comments come after he lashed out at a CNBC reporter two days ago over a term used to describe his approach to trade negotiations.
