Trump Blocks AP Access Over Gulf of America Renaming

The White House has restricted The Associated Press from covering presidential events due to its refusal to use President Donald Trump’s preferred name for the Gulf of Mexico. In January, Trump directed the Department of the Interior to rename the waterbody as the “Gulf of America.” However, The AP has maintained its traditional name and provided guidance stating it will refer to it by both names.

This decision has sparked a disagreement between the White House and the AP. Taylor Budowich, deputy chief of staff, has claimed that the AP is being “divisive” and spreading misinformation, leading to the restriction on their access to the Oval Office and Air Force One. He stated that this action allows other reporters to cover these events.

In response, AP spokesperson Lauren Easton emphasized the importance of freedom of speech, citing it as a cornerstone of American democracy. The organization believes that limiting access based on reporting choices infringes upon this fundamental right.

The AP has also expressed its concern about government retaliation against journalists and their views. Julie Pace, senior vice president and executive editor, wrote to White House chief of staff Susie Wiles, stating that the actions taken were intended to punish the AP for its speech.
