The US administration has proposed a 20% reduction in NASA’s overall budget, with the majority of cuts concentrated in the agency’s Science Mission Directorate. The draft budget request calls for approximately $5 billion less than the current $25 billion, mainly affecting planetary science, Earth science, and astrophysics research.
Key reductions include:
* A 50% cut to science funding, from $7.5 billion in 2025 to $3.9 billion
* A two-thirds cut to astrophysics, down to $487 million
* A greater than 50% cut to Earth science, down to $1.033 billion
* A 30% cut to Planetary science, down to $1.929 billion
Ongoing missions like the Hubble and James Webb Space Telescopes will continue to receive support, but the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, a highly anticipated observatory, will be killed due to lack of funding.
