US President Donald Trump has floated tougher sanctions against Russia and expressed skepticism about Vladimir Putin’s intentions in the war with Ukraine.
Trump made the comments on social media after meeting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for the first time since a heated Oval Office discussion. The White House described their meeting as “productive,” but provided no further details.
In his post, Trump questioned whether Putin wants to stop the war and suggested that Russia’s actions are “tapping me along” – implying that stronger sanctions are needed. He also acknowledged that Crimea was stolen from Ukraine, a rare admission from the US president.
Trump previously presented an offer to end the war, which included recognition of Crimea under Russian control. However, Zelenskyy has repeatedly said this is a non-negotiable red line. Despite this, Trump’s comments suggest he remains committed to finding a peace deal with Russia.
The two countries are “very close to a deal,” according to Trump, but he believes they need to meet at high levels to finalize the agreement.
