US President Donald Trump made a phone call to Sen. Tim Scott on Friday, after the South Carolina Republican condemned a racist video featuring former President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle Obama.
The video, which showed the Obamas’ heads superimposed over the bodies of apes, sparked widespread outrage among lawmakers. Sen. Scott called for its removal, saying it was “the most racist thing I’ve seen out of this White House”. Other Republican lawmakers also contacted Trump to urge him to take down the post.
The video was initially defended by the White House, but later a staffer admitted that they had made the mistake. Trump confirmed speaking with Sen. Scott and said he would remove the video.
Sen. Scott has been a vocal critic of Trump in the past, including over his 2017 comment on Charlottesville. Despite this, he remains a close ally to the president.
