US President Donald Trump falsely claimed that Canadian province Ontario released an anti-tariff ad featuring a manipulated speech by former US President Ronald Reagan, stating it was “FAKE” and misrepresented Reagan’s views on tariffs.
The ad in question used some of Reagan’s remarks from his April 25, 1987, radio address but selectively edited them to misrepresent his stance. The original speech framed actions against Japan as exceptions to Reagan’s general support for free trade. Despite the ad’s edits, it does not misrepresent Reagan’s views on tariffs.
Trump cited a statement from the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute as evidence, claiming they called out Ontario’s “misleading and selective editing.” However, the foundation did not respond by publication.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford initially planned to air a $75 million ad buy featuring the manipulated speech but later paused its airing after Trump canceled trade talks with Canada.
