Trump Claims Six Wars Ended During Second Term

US President Donald Trump claims to have ended almost one war per month during his second term, citing diplomatic agreements in the Middle East, Africa, and Asia. However, critics argue that his record is exaggerated and that some of these “victories” are fragile and don’t solve underlying conflicts.

Trump’s team points to agreements with Armenia and Azerbaijan, Cambodia and Thailand, Israel and Iran, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, Egypt and Ethiopia, and Serbia and Kosovo as examples of his peacemaking efforts. However, some of these deals were brokered by other parties, such as the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, or are still in negotiation.

One notable exception is a joint peace declaration signed by Armenia and Azerbaijan on their long-running conflict in the Caucasus. The agreement commits the two former Soviet republics to recognizing each other’s borders and renouncing violence against the other. However, complex negotiations loom on knotty constitutional and territorial issues before a full peace agreement.

Trump’s success is also attributed to his ability to use presidential power in novel ways to stop sudden conflicts from escalating into full-scale wars. However, some critics argue that his evisceration of the US Agency for International Development and downsizing of the State Department may deprive him of the tools needed to turn breakthroughs into lasting peace agreements.

The article concludes that while Trump’s record is often exaggerated, there are real achievements in his peacemaking efforts. However, it also raises new questions about his commitment to long-term peace initiatives, particularly in Ukraine, where a sudden ceasefire may not be enough to solve underlying causes of the conflict.
