Trump Cracks Down on Trade with 14 Countries Ahead of August 1 Deadline

US President Donald Trump has increased pressure on countries to negotiate trade deals, warning that tariffs will rise on July 9 unless agreements are reached by August 1. The deadline applies to all countries except China, which still faces a tariff increase.

So far, only China, the UK, and Vietnam have secured deals with the US. However, Trump has raised tariff rates for some countries, including South Korea, Japan, and South Africa.

South Korea plans to accelerate trade negotiations with the US ahead of August 1, amid threats of a 25% tariff increase. The country aims to address its trade surplus with the US and improve manufacturing ties.

Japan’s Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba has convened a task force to discuss trade with the US, while South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa criticized the unilateral imposition of a new 30% tariff on his country’s exports.

The move comes after Trump provided a brief reprieve, delaying the implementation of tariffs from July 9 to August 1. This delay applies to all countries except China, which still faces increased tariffs in August.
