Trump Criticizes UN as “Empty Words,” Then Reassures Guterres

US President Donald Trump criticized the United Nations, saying it failed to support American-led peace efforts, but then reassured UN chief Antonio Guterres that he fully supports the world body. In a speech at the General Assembly, Trump claimed he had never received help from the UN and questioned its effectiveness.

Trump has repeatedly expressed his distrust of multilateral institutions, including the UN. He argues they often fail to serve US interests. Despite this, he assured Guterres that he is “100% behind” the UN and believes in its potential for peace.

The UN has been facing a cash crisis, with Washington being the largest contributor. The US owes $2.8 billion, mostly for the regular budget. Trump’s remarks reflect his long-standing skepticism of international bodies, but Guterres reassured him that the UN is “entirely at your disposal” to work together for peace.

In contrast to Trump’s criticism, Guterres emphasized the UN’s efforts in peace mediation and its need for carrots and sticks to be effective. The US has reduced funding for some UN agencies and quit several others, including UNESCO and the Paris climate deal.
