President Donald Trump sat down for a phone interview with NBC News on Saturday, in which he addressed his plans to impose tariffs on foreign-made automobiles, his commitment to annexing Greenland, and the controversy surrounding a secret Signal group chat involving senior members of his administration.
Trump maintained that his tariffs would have “no impact” on American consumers, as people will start buying American-made cars instead of foreign ones if prices rise. He also stated that he has “absolutely had real conversations” about annexing Greenland and believes it’s possible to do so without military force.
However, Trump was unapologetic in the face of criticism over his handling of national security adviser Michael Waltz being added to a Signal app group chat with senior administration officials discussing Houthi militants. Trump called the story “fake news” and claimed there was no reason for him to fire Waltz due to the incident.
Trump stated he would not delay imposing April 2 tariffs on various consumer goods, which are set to take effect in just weeks. He offered to negotiate with countries over the tariffs only if they provide something of significant value.
The president also discussed his commitment to international peace and security, stating that acquiring Greenland would be a step towards achieving this goal.
