The US government has proposed that the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) pay $1 billion in exchange for releasing $584 million in federal research funding that was frozen last week. This move is part of a larger effort by President Donald Trump’s administration to recoup some of the money spent on grants.
UCLA officials confirmed the proposal and stated their intention to review it. The university’s president, James Milliken, has said they are engaged in talks with government officials to restore the grants.
