US President Donald Trump has confirmed he is not joking about seeking a third presidential term, despite the US Constitution’s two-term limit. Trump said it’s too early to think about running again, but hinted that there are methods to be explored. The 22nd Amendment of the US Constitution requires a two-thirds majority in Congress and ratification by three-fourths of states for any proposed constitutional changes.
Trump made the comments in a telephone interview with NBC News, after some of his allies have suggested keeping him in office beyond 2028. If Trump takes on another term, he would be 82 years old. The idea of a third presidential term has sparked debate, with former President Franklin D. Roosevelt setting the precedent for a two-term presidency and breaking tradition by serving a third term.
Trump’s comments come as some advisers, including Steve Bannon, are exploring ways to potentially allow him to run again in 2028, raising questions about the definition of a term limit.
