US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order ending targets set by his predecessor, Joe Biden, for electric vehicles (EVs) to make up 50% of new car sales by 2030. The move revokes a non-binding 2021 executive order and may require cooperation from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to establish new rules.
The new order cancels government funds for EV charging stations and eliminates a waiver allowing states to ban internal-combustion cars by 2035, targeting California’s permit specifically. Trump also directs his administration to reconsider eliminating subsidies that favor electric vehicles over other technologies.
Automakers had requested stability and predictability in EV sales, citing billions of dollars invested in research and development. However, it is unclear if the executive order alone can reverse federal emissions standards, which would require new legislation through the EPA.
The decision marks a shift away from Biden’s goal of 50% EV sales by 2030 and may impact efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The Trump administration plans to direct the EPA to reconsider stricter emissions rules, currently in place until 2032.
