US President Donald Trump’s top negotiator, Steve Witkoff, has predicted a “successful” phone call between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday. Witkoff believes the conversation will help identify key areas of agreement in their negotiations to end Russia’s war in Ukraine.
The US special envoy said that uranium enrichment is a “red line” in Iran negotiations, emphasizing the need for a deal that does not include nuclear capabilities. Witkoff also expressed concern over humanitarian conditions in Gaza, stating that there are “initiatives underway” to address the situation.
Witkoff’s comments come after delegations from Ukraine and Russia met in Turkey on Thursday for their first direct talks related to ending the war. A Ukrainian source reported that Russian demands were deemed unrealistic.
Trump announced Saturday that he will speak with Putin over the phone on Monday at 10 a.m. ET, following up with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and various NATO allies after the call.
