The US may soon see a shift in marijuana laws under President Trump’s leadership. He is expected to order marijuana reclassified as a Schedule III drug, which would ease tax restrictions on growers and sellers in states with permissive laws. This move wouldn’t legalize marijuana nationwide but would send a signal that it’s more acceptable.
As marijuana becomes increasingly available, younger generations are adopting the “California sober lifestyle.” Many are using marijuana alongside hard drugs and alcohol, despite evidence suggesting this can have negative health effects. Since 2010, more young people are using marijuana, with those aged 19-30 doubling their usage to 29% and those aged 35 tripling it.
A study found that cannabis users under 50 are six times more likely to suffer a heart attack and four times more likely to experience strokes compared to non-users. Marijuana can cause blood vessel pressure issues and affect cardiac muscles, leading to “the munchies.”
The reclassification could have significant implications for public health, as some argue it may be worse than other unhealthy habits like consuming ultraprocessed foods.
