Trump Fires CFPB Director Rohit Chopra Amid Biden Admin Purge

US President Donald Trump has fired Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) Director Rohit Chopra, one of the last holdovers from the Democratic administration. The move comes as part of a purge of Biden-administration appointees. Chopra had served since January 20, 2021.

In a letter to Trump, Chopra described his time at the CFPB as an “extraordinary privilege” and praised the agency’s work in restoring the rule of law. He was appointed by Trump after serving on the Federal Trade Commission and later became deputy director under President Joe Biden.

Chopra, an ally of Senator Elizabeth Warren, stated that he would leave his post if the new president asked. His term as CFPB director had ended, but Trump’s decision to fire him came despite this.

Consumer Reports praised Chopra’s work at the CFPB, saying he “leaves behind an impressive track record of accomplishments for working families.” The organization noted that under Chopra’s leadership, the CFPB secured billions of dollars in relief for consumers who had been cheated out of their money and established critical new rules to ensure fairness.
