Trump Fires Top National Security Prosecutor After Social Media Backlash

The US Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia fired its top national security prosecutor, Michael Ben’Ary, after a right-wing activist and writer falsely linked him to FBI Director James Comey’s case. The firing came amid social media backlash against Ben’Ary.

Ben’Ary was involved in a memo outlining concerns about the evidence in Comey’s case but wasn’t part of the indictment process. The Justice Department declined to comment on the firing, which appears to be part of a series of purges targeting prosecutors and employees by prominent MAGA influencers.

In 2022, three former FBI agents filed a lawsuit claiming they were fired after being targeted by pro-Trump social media accounts.
