US President Donald Trump has asserted that Egypt and Jordan will take in displaced Palestinians from Gaza, despite both countries rejecting his plan to relocate them. Trump made the statement during a press conference at the Oval Office on Thursday.
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and Jordan’s King Abdullah II had previously dismissed Trump’s proposal, with Sisi calling it an “injustice” that they would not participate in. Meanwhile, King Abdullah II emphasized his country’s commitment to keeping Palestinians on their land.
Trump’s comments come after a recent trip by his Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff to Gaza and a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The US president also floated the idea of “cleaning out” the Gaza Strip last week, citing its reduced state following the 15-month war between Hamas and Israel.
The fragile ceasefire in Gaza has been a focus of Trump’s efforts to maintain stability in the region.
