The US Department of Justice has ordered Manhattan federal prosecutors to dismiss corruption charges against New York City Mayor Eric Adams, citing unfair timing and potential impact on his ability to address immigration issues.
Acting Deputy Attorney General Emil Bove claimed the case was brought too close to the city’s primary election in June, hindering Adams’ focus on addressing illegal immigration. A memo directed Acting Manhattan U.S. Attorney Danielle Sassoon to dismiss the charges “without prejudice,” allowing the office to reopen the case if necessary.
The decision comes after a three-year investigation and one count of bribery, four counts of campaign finance fraud against Adams, who allegedly received favors in exchange for soliciting illegal donations from foreign sources.
Mayor Adams is actively running for re-election and can now claim he was unjustly charged with corruption. The dismissal may also affect his ability to obtain matching funds.
The Trump Justice Department’s move has been hailed as vindication by Adams’ lawyer, Alex Spiro, who claimed the mayor is innocent and had never used his office for personal gain.
